A multimode plastic optical fiber is characterized by a certain number ofparameters including its numerical aperture. This defines the maximum angle oflight at the entrance of the fiber allowing its reflection within the waveguide.This light cone at the fiber entry also defines its light cone at the fiberexit. A plastic optical fiber with a large numerical aperture will allow thelight cone to be widened at the fiber exit and reduce the radius of curvatureof the fiber. These fibers with large numerical aperture are used inter alia inthe medical environment for endoscopy or ophthalmic surgery.
